SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office is a project of the German non-profit organization akno e.V. to support scientists affected by the war against Ukraine. The project is carried out with the financial support of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany.

How we help

In 2025, the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office offers two formats of support: individual support for Ukrainian scientists who find themselves in a special crisis situation and participation in language courses for academic English. Applicants for both formats undergo a verification process.

Individual support for scholars
Ukrainian scholars in special crisis situations can apply to us for individual support. Applications will be accepted until December 2025 or until funds are exhausted.

Language courses for academic English
We offer an intensive online English course for scholars at risk with the aim of enhancing participants’ reading, listening and writing skills in both informal, day-to-day communication and for work in academic environments.

Verification criteria
You may apply for support from the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office programme if you meet the following criteria:

You hold the Ukrainian citizenship at the moment of application

You are teaching and/or doing research and are in particular a candidate for an academic degree (or, in exceptional cases, had the status of an reseracher as of 01.01.2021). We examine each case individually. If your situation does not fully meet the criteria d
