SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office is a project of the German non-profit organization akno e.V. to support scientists affected by the war against Ukraine. The project is carried out with the financial support of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany.
How we help
In 2025, the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office offers two support formats: individual support for Ukrainian researchers in crisis situations and participation in academic English courses. Participation in either format is subject to verification.
Individual Support for Researchers
We are accepting applications for individual support for Ukrainian researchers who find themselves in critical situations. Applications are accepted until December 2025 or until funds are exhausted.
We offer an intensive online English course for at-risk scholars that develops skills for working in academic environments and everyday communication. The course improves reading, writing, and comprehension, and helps participants use English effectively in academic institutions.
You may apply for support from the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office programme if you meet the following criteria:
At the time of application, you are a citizen of Ukraine;
You are engaged in teaching and/or research activities, including being a doctoral candidate (or, as an exception, you held a research position as of January 1, 2021).
We examine each case individually. If your situation does not fully meet the criteria described above, but you still need urgent support, you can contact us by e-mail at support.ukr@science-at-risk.org.
You can support scientists at risk due to the war in Ukraine and political repression in Russia and Belarus with your donation.
Your donation goes directly to a scientist at risk through our support formats. With your donation you enable a scholar in Ukraine or from Belarus or Russia to give a public lecture or to publish a scientific article. Your donation goes to "Akademisches Netzwerk Osteuropa (akno e.V.)", the organisation behind the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office project. Every Donation supports academic freedom!

Individual support for researchers
In 2025, the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office supports Ukrainian scholars who find themselves in a critical situation due to the war and its consequences. You can apply for individual support if you meet the verification criteria and have not yet received financial support from the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office.
Forms of support:
Participation in public events: Participation in conferences, “round tables”, seminars, lectures and research presentations that promote academic integration and deepen involvement in international networks.
Publishing an academic profile on the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office website: this is an opportunity to showcase your teaching and research experience as well as your research interests and expertise on specific topics. Partner institutions in our network can draw on this information to recruit researchers for collaboration.
Interviews and documentation of scholars’ personal stories: the recording of interviews with scholars who find themselves in critical situations (job loss, war, displacement, etc.) and their account of their academic achievements and the challenges they face. The materials are published to draw attention to the situation of Ukrainian scholars in the international context.
The SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office offers an intensive online English course for academics at risk (level A2-B2+).
The course aims to develop the language skills needed to work in an academic environment. By participating in the course, you will learn the basic structures and terminology required for writing essays, research articles, reports and other academic texts. You will improve your listening comprehension and understanding of academic vocabulary. Through the course you will be able to strengthen and develop your confidence in your communication skills.
The course takes place twice a week for 90 minutes and comprises a total of 40 lessons. There is also the opportunity to attend additional language clubs to practise oral communication.
