SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office is a project founded by the Academic Network Eastern Europe, akno e.V., that provides support to academics and students that have been affected by the war in Ukraine or by political repression in Belarus and Russia.

Ukraine
Der Krieg hat den akademischen Sektor der Ukraine schwer getroffen: Über 40 % der Hochschulen wurden beschädigt, und für 25 % der Studierenden ist das Studium unterbrochen. Forschende sind von Vertreibung und Arbeitsausfällen betroffen. Wir leisten Nothilfe, fördern Forschung und ermöglichen internationale Vernetzung – um intellektuelle Resilienz zu sichern.
Belarus
Seit den gefälschten Wahlen 2020 ist die belarussische Wissenschaft massiver Repression ausgesetzt. Über 1.500 Akademikerinnen mussten das Land verlassen, mehr als 20 Hochschulen haben ihre Autonomie verloren. Wir bieten Nothilfe und Vernetzungsmöglichkeiten für gefährdete oder im Exil lebende Wissenschaftlerinnen – damit sie ihre akademische Arbeit in Sicherheit fortsetzen können.
Russland
Wissenschaftlerinnen, die sich in Russland gegen den Krieg äußern, sehen sich wachsender Repression ausgesetzt. Seit 2022 wurden über 800 Hochschulangehörige entlassen, und 100.000 Studierende sind geflohen. Wir unterstützen gefährdete Wissenschaftlerinnen mit Nothilfe, beruflichen Perspektiven und einer Plattform für freien wissenschaftlichen Austausch – um unabhängige Forschung jenseits staatlicher Kontrolle zu bewahren.
Who we help
You may apply for support from the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office programme if you meet the following criteria
Аcademy of science; university; historical archive and museum (research fellow); think tank; civic society institution.
For applicants from Russia:

For applicants from Belarus or Russia:
For applicants from Belarus or Russia: You are a MA student or a recent graduate who intends to enroll in a PhD programme.
How we help
PUBLIC EVENTS
To support the scholars in our programme, the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office organises public events to showcase their expertise and research. These events include panel discussions, lectures, workshops and research presentations that help to highlight the scientific relevance of the experts. In addition, the SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office provides participating scientists with a one-off fee for their work.

LANGUAGE COURSES
SCIENCE AT RISK Emergency Office offers intensive, online English language courses for different language levels designed to enhance participants’ skills in both informal, day-to-day communication and for work in academic environments. Our experienced teachers will provide participants with the tools necessary to become more proficient readers and writers, thereby fostering scholarly work in English.

If the scholars can’t participate in an event in public, we organise closed events or individual interview. This is one of the few income opportunities for academics at risk.
